Paper Boats, Sinking in the Sea, as a Prototype Would

So, every since I played Transistor by Supergiant Games, I've been in love with the end credits song, "Paper Boats".  The lyrics depict the main characters as paper boats who drift away from each other, but always end up together. The song is inspiring and beautiful. If you are interested in it, you can find it here:

Anyways, when Brian told us to do an object that holds significance to us in paper craft, I wasn't sure what to do. I've always held onto small, complex items for sentimentality. Nothing I owned, and emotionally valued, would transfer easily into papercraft.

Except a small model ship.

As soon as I saw the ship sitting on my shelf, the memories of Transistor came rushing back and "Paper Boats was playing in my mind. That's when I knew I hit gold, so I popped into rhino and made this model:

Just a prototype for now, but I think this is a strong start.

Some things I realized for the final:

- Make holes for the masts, because gluing them doesn't work

- Create more tabs, and make them all bigger

- Make the actual ship bigger

- Maybe add strings to the sails for accuracy

-Make the captain's helm so it looks more "ship-like"

But Other than these, I think this is pretty good. The diagonal head mast turned out the best, which is ironic because I expected the straight masts to work better.

As an aside, this was my second idea, in class I was thinking of a dear skull that had flowers in it, but that was way too complex for my skill level. I'm much happier with this.

That's all for this week, catch you next time
